United passed-up chance to sign Aubameyang

Manchester United had the opportunity to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund but had concerns about his style of play.

The Old Trafford side tracked the Gabonese striker for a number of months during his time with the Bundesliga side, and were ready to make a formal move for him after Zlatan Ibrahimovich suffered a bad knee injury in April 2017.

However, they decided to reject the chance to sign him, because their manager at the time, Jose Mourinho, was in the market for a more physical striker who was able to press and hold up the ball.  Instead they chose to spend £75 million on Romelu Lukaku from Everton.

In the end, Lukaku was sold to Inter Milan this summer, after failing to convince during his time at United, whilst Arsenal pounced and bought Aubameyang last January, in a £53 million move. He has since gone on to score for them 49 times in 76 appearances.
