Arsenal have edged ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign the highly regarded 15 year old defender Logan Pye from Sunderland.
The teenager had been linked with United for some time, and the Manchester club had considered making a move for him earlier this summer, but dithered over the decision.
However, that hesitation appears to have cost them, with the Gunners ready to sign him in the next transfer window, after he turns 16 in October and is legally able to join them.
Pye can play either as a full-back or centre-half, and has been capped at England under-16 level.
If he does join Arsenal, Pye will be treading in the footsteps of another Sunderland academy player, Sam Greenwood, who made the same journey to North London last year. The 17 year old striker signed his first professional contract for the Gunners last week, and has already been linked with moves to both Juventus and AC Milan.
