Manchester United missed out on signing one of their main summer transfer targets because former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri blocked the move.
United have had a strong interest for some time in signing 28-year old Brazilian winger Douglas Costa from Juventus, and made enquiries about his availability of the player, who was restricted to just 17 appearances in the league last season due to injury,
However, Sarri, the incoming manager at Juventus after leaving Stamford Bridge, was not keen on allowing Costa to leave, and vetoed any move for him, preferring that he remain in Turin.
Costa joined Juventus from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2017, initially on loan, until the multiple Serie A champions made the move permanent a year later, signing him for £35 million plus bonuses.
The winger has featured in both of his side’s two league games this season, the opening weekend win away at Parma, and the thriller against Napoli before the international break which his side won thanks to an injury-time own goal.
