Chelsea have begun talks with Italian left-back Emerson Palmeiri about a new long-term deal at the club.
He is under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2022, but Chelsea have decided to begin discussions now as a pre-emptive move to try and forestall a January bid from Juventus, where their former boss Maurizio Sarri is now the manager.
Palmeiri signed for Chelsea from Roma in January 2018, but initially struggled for first-team football, and was behind Marcos Alonso in the pecking order. It was only towards the end of Sarri’s tenure at Stamford Bridge that the Italian started to use his compatriot, with Palmieri playing seven games towards the end of last season.
He has played all four Premier League games for Frank Lampard this season, and is now established as the number one left-back at the club.
Although born in Brazil, he has Italian ancestry on his mother’s side, and he became an Italian citizen in 2017. He has six international caps to date for his adopted country.
