European footballer of the year Virgil van Dijk has agreed a bumper new deal with Liverpool.
The 28 year old Dutch captain was already under contract at Anfield until 2023, but now he has agreed a lucrative new six year contract which will tie him to the Champions League winners until 2025, and see his basic wages rise from £125,000 a week nearer to the £200,000 mark. And the structure of his pay packet has been adjusted as well, so that the basic element is increased, and there is less emphasis on bonuses.
Discussions between Liverpool and van Dijk’s representatives had been continuing for some time, but the credit for the improved terms is due in part to the example provided by Manchester United signing Harry Maguire from Leicester for £80 million, providing a benchmark in terms of what the central defender was worth in the market today.
Van Dijk skippered his country to a stunning 4 – 2 win over Germany in Hamburg on Friday night.
