The combined amount of money spent by the top 5 leagues in Europe this summer reached a combined total of £5 billion.
This unprecedented figure is due to a combination of factors, including new television deals bringing fresh money into the game, and squad overhauls at some of the biggest clubs following changes in manager.
The Premier League’s share of that figure was £1.41 billion. However, despite his being the most spent by any single league, this was actually a fall over recent years, and net spend by clubs was at its lowest level since 2015.
The biggest jump in spending came from La Liga clubs who surpassed the £1 billion barrier for three first time, with the big three of Barcelona, Real and Atlético Madrid all spending lavishly this summer.
