Smalling in Roma loan move

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling will join Italian side Roma on loan for the rest of the season.

That is after the Serie A club agreed a £2.7 million loan fee, without an option to buy.

The England international is happy with the move, having fallen down the pecking order at Manchester United, with Harry Maguire, Viktor Lindelof, and Axel Tuanzebe all ahead of him in the queue of central defenders at Old Trafford.

The 29-year old London-born defender signed for United in January 2010 from Fulham, and has made more than 320 appearances for United in all competitions, scoring 18 times. During his time at Old Trafford, he has won the Premier League twice, the FA Cup, EFL Cup and the Europa League.

Smalling is the third Manchester United to move to Serie A this summer, following the departures of forwards Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sánchez to Inter Milan.
