Liverpool are ready to offer a contract to goalkeeper Andy Lonergan who is a free agent, following the injury that first-choice stopper Alisson suffered in the first-half of their opening day victory against Norwich City on Friday night.
Alisson slipped whilst taking a goal kick, and had to be substituted, with former West Ham United keeper Adrian, who only joined the club last week, taking his place between the sticks.
Now initial scans have suggested that the Brazilian has torn his calf, and could be out of action for anything between four and six weeks.
That leaves Liverpool in a quandary because, having sold Simon Mignolet to Club Brugge, Adrian is the only fit senior keeper that they have on their books, with the third-choice man, Calomhin Kelleher, recovering from a broken wrist.
35-year old Lonergan was released by Middlesbrough at the end of last season and can be signed, despite the transfer window having shut, because he is a free agent. He has already toured with Liverpool this summer as he provided cover whilst Alisson took his delayed holiday after featuring in the Copa América.
Andy is an exiled English football fan living in Cyprus. He loves all sports but football is his abiding passion, and he still has dreams every now and then about scoring the winning goal in a Wembley Cup Final, even though his playing days are long gone. He follows most major leagues, across Europe at least, and has a favoured team in each. When he’s not watching, listening, reading or downloading podcasts about football, he spend his time worrying about his beloved Arsenal.
