Tottenham are the favourites to edge out fellow Premier League rivals Liverpool and Arsenal in the race to sign Spanish midfielder Dani Cellabos.
The 22-year old has been identified as surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu as manager Zinedine Zidane continues to overhaul his squad, despite being one of the biggest stars for the Spanish side that won the European under-21 Championship in Italy.
Spurs regard Ceballos as a potential replacement for Christian Eriksen if he opts to leave White Hart Lane before the end of the transfer window, and are set to sign him on a loan deal, which will include an option to buy him as part of the agreement.
Cellabos will be the third summer arrival for Spurs who have already smashed their transfer record to sign Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombélé. They have also signed Jack Clarke from Leeds United, but the teenage striker will spent next season back on loan with the Yorkshire side.
