On loan Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic is in talks with Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg.
That is according to The Daily Mail. The 24 year-old Croatian international is on a season-long loan at Stamford Bridge from his parent club Real Madrid, and, although he would like to stay at Stamford Bridge, there is no option in his current contract to buy.
And whilst manager Mauricio Sarri has previously indicated that he would like to make the Kovacic move into a permanent one, there is considerable doubt about his own future at the club.
Much will also depend on how successful Chelsea’s lawyers are in overturning the two transfer window ban imposed on the club for breaching the rules on signing players under 18. If their appeal fails then the whole question becomes moot anyway, and Chelsea will not be able to sign Kovacic, or anybody else, until July 2020.
