Arsenal have identified the new man they want to take over as Technical Director.
The Gunners have been searching for somebody to assume the vacant role for months, and thought they had lined-up Monchi to take up the position. However, the former Roma man snubbed them for a return to his former club Sevilla, whilst the next man on their shortlist, Marc Overmars, chose to stay with Ajax instead.
Now they are ready to turn to Marseille’s Sporting Director, Andoni Zubizarreta instead, who Raul Sanllehi, Arsenal’s head of football, knows well from their time together at Barcelona.
Zubizarreta made his name as a goalkeeper with Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona, and Valencia, as well as the Spanish national side for whom he made 126 international appearances. After retirement, he became Barcelona director of football, before moving to a similar role at Marseille four years ago.
Andy is an exiled English football fan living in Cyprus. He loves all sports but football is his abiding passion, and he still has dreams every now and then about scoring the winning goal in a Wembley Cup Final, even though his playing days are long gone. He follows most major leagues, across Europe at least, and has a favoured team in each. When he’s not watching, listening, reading or downloading podcasts about football, he spend his time worrying about his beloved Arsenal.
