Manchester United are refusing to bow to goalkeeper David de Gea, amidst ongoing concerns about his form.
The Old Trafford club have been trying to convince the 28-year old to sign a new long-term contract with them, and are prepared to pay him £350,000 a week, which would make him the best paid goalkeeper in the world. However, he has refused to accept those terms, and is holding out for more, a decision which could see the club forced to sell him.
To buy themselves time, United recently triggered an automatic one-year extension in his current contract, reports The Evening Standard but that merely postpones the moment when a final decision has to be made about his future, with United unwilling to let the matter drag on to the last year of his contract.
Former United players like Gary Neville have suggested that de Gea’s form has dropped because of the ongoing contract dispute, but interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer absolved him of responsibility for Granit Xhaka’s opener for Arsenal, which swerved past him on Sunday.
