Manchester City may have to break the world transfer record for a defender if they want to sign Leicester’s Ben Chilwell in the summer.
That is according to The Daily Telegraph who reports that City may have to top the £72 million that Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk if they hope to land the 22-year old.
The Etihad club are in the market for a new left-back in the summer, after becoming frustrated with the injuries that have blighted Benjamin Mendy’s time at the club, whilst the former Monaco man has not always endeared himself to manager Pep Guardiola by his over-use of frequent social media and his failure to always turn up for treatment on time.
Chilwell is their top target to replace him, but Leicester feels no need to sell a player who has broken into the England side this season. He is contracted until June 2024 at The King Power Stadium, and new manager Brandan Rodgers regards him as an integral part of the squad he wants to build at Leicester.
