De Gea playing contract hardball with United

David de Gea and his agents are playing hardball with Manchester United over his new contract.

The 28-year old Spanish goalkeeper is refusing to sign the new long-term deal that is on the table for him unless his weekly wages see a hefty increase, from £200,000 to £350,000. United do not want to pay that much because of the potential damage it would do to their wage structure and, according to The Daily Mirror, are hoping that some middle ground can be found.

However, with the club already having had to activate a one year contract extension for de Gea in November, he appears to hold most of the cards in negotiations. He knows that the club are desperate to keep him, and, at the same time, is fully aware that if he does decide to leave that the top clubs in Europe would be queuing up for his services.
