Former Arsenal winger Marc Overmars has been linked with a return to Arsenal.
The 45-year old is currently Director of Football at Ajax, and, according to The Daily Mail is the favourite to take up a similar role with Arsenal, the team he played for between 1997 and 2000, and with whom he won a league and cup double.
Director of football is a new role at Arsenal, but the remit of the post holder is clear – to liaise with the manager on transfers and tactics, and to impart and implement a football vision throughout the club, very much along the model adopted by Barcelona.
The search for suitable candidates is being led by Arsenal’s head of football, Raul Sanllehi, who briefly intersected Overmars’ career when both were at Barcelona together. He and Josh Kroenke, son of Arsenal owner Stan, are expected to interview prospective candidates in the next few months.
