Newcastle to break transfer record for Almirón

Newcastle United are set to sign Miguel Almirón from Atalanta United before transfer deadline day, for a fee of £20 million, which will exceed the transfer record fee they paid for Michael Own back in 2005.

The Paraguayan international has arrived in England and is expected to have a medical before his official unveiling as a Newcastle player.

Atlanta originally wanted £30 million for the attacking midfielder, but that valuation has been negotiated down, according to The Guardian, although the structure of the payment and bonuses has yet to be agreed.

Napoli and Inter Milan were reported to both have shown late interest, but, in this case, Newcastle seems to have won the race for the 24-year old.

His arrival will further boost the mood at St. James Park, buoyant after the club’s unexpected defeat of Champions Manchester City on Tuesday night.
