West Ham linked with move for Newcastle midfielder

West Ham are considering making a bid to sign England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from Newcastle United.

That is according to The Daily Mail who report that Hammers manager Manuel Pellegrini would like to add Shelvey to his squad, but may have to sell a few players first to finance the move, and make way for him in the team.

Another sticking point may be the reluctance of Newcastle to let the player, who would likely cost around £20 million, go, without assurances from owner Mike Ashley that manager Rafa Benitez would be able to sign a suitable replacement.

Shelvey, who is a boyhood West Ham fan, spent two years at the club’s academy as a youth before moving to Charlton where he got his break in first team football.  He then moved to Liverpool and then Swansea City, before his transfer to Newcastle for £12 million three years ago.
