Arsenal exercise Nacho Monreal contract option

Arsenal have chosen to exercise a clause within Nacho Monreal’s contract which will extend his stay at the club for a further year.

The 32-year old Spaniard was in the final year of his current deal at The Emirates, but, according to  ESPN, they have now chosen to activate the option to tie him down to a further year in North London.

That will please manager Unai Emery who indicated his preference to keep Monreal as far back as September.  The Basque player, who joined Arsenal from Malaga six years ago, has been one of the club’s most persistent performers in recent years, deputising as centre-back as well as his regular spot at left-back, and his experience will be valuable as Emery begins to shape the team in his own image.

Currently injured, Monreal, who has 22 caps for Spain, will be hoping to be back in contention for the club’s Premier League clash away to West Ham on Saturday.
