Solskjaer set to be handed transfer kitty of £50 million

Manchester United interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to be handed a transfer kitty of £50 million to spend in the January window.

The Norwegian, who was appointed until the end of the season on Wednesday after the sacking of Jose Mourinho the previous day has been given the green light, according to ESPN to strengthen the squad when the window opens, with a central defender and a more forward minded player the priority.

It was the club’s failure to sign a central defender last summer that was one of the causes of friction between Mourinho and the United board, and it will be ironic if his successor is given the money to spend on the type of player that the Portuguese identified as the team’s biggest need.

Amongst the players being tipped for a January move to Old Trafford are Brazilian winger Douglas Costa, out of favour with Juventus, and defenders Toby Alderweireld, Kalidou Kalibaly of Napoli, and Porto’s Eder Militao.
