Are United ready to write-off two seasons?

Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher believes the club’s decision to appoint an interim manager for the rest of the season looks like affecting their chances of competing at the top level for the rest of this season and the next.

Former United strike Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to be confirmed as interim manager today after a website post appeared on the United website, but was then swiftly deleted.

Jose Mourinho was sacked as manager after two and a half years at United on Tuesday and, with no obvious candidates available to take over, the club have decided to go down the stand-by route, although the speed with which Solskjaer, who is expected to be assisted by Mike Phelan, has been identified suggests that the Old Trafford Board had made approaches to him in advance.

Speaking to BBC Five Live Fletcher said that the club had been mismanaged since Sir Alec Ferguson retired in 2013 and that “They’re almost writing off this season and next season because if they appoint a new manager in the summer he’s not going to have much time to look for new players.”

Mauricio Pochettino has been installed as the early favourite to land the United job on a full-time basis in the summer, although he is also likely to be in demand by Real Madrid.
