Southampton close in on new manager

Southampton are close to appointing former RB Leipzig boss Ralph Hasanhüttl as their new manager.

That is according to The Guardian who report that they hope to have the 51-year old Austrian in situ before the club travel to Wembley to play Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

The Saints sacked previous incumbent Mark Hughes after 9 months in charge on Monday, after a dismal start to the season that sees them languishing in the bottom three, with just a solitary league win, away to Crystal Palace in September, so far this season to their name.

Hughes helped the club escape relegation from the Premier League last season, but results have not gone his way this time round, and when key boardroom ally, vice chairman Les Read, was sacked in November, the writing was on the wall for the Welshman.

Hasanhüttl is a former Austrian international striker, who helped steer unfashionable Leipzig to sixth and second-place finishes in the Bundesliga, having won promotions previously with clubs such as Ingolstadt and Aalen.
