The English Football League has made a formal request to FIFA for the rules on the signings of loan players to be changed.
Previously clubs outside the Premier League were able to bring in players on short-term loans – ranging from 28 to 93 days – throughout the season, but that rule was scrapped before the start of 2016 – 2017 campaign.
Now, however, as part of a broader raft of proposals aimed at reforming the global transfer system, the EFL is pressing for the rules to be relaxed again, as The BBC reports.
They support the idea that teams in any league, below the top flight in their respective countries, should be able to bring in players on loan throughout the season, with an important caveat, however.
In order to protect the domestic game in each league, they are suggesting that loan deals should be restricted to players eligible to play for the national team in each country, and who are under 23 years of age when the loan starts.
