Martial goal against Newcastle costly for United

Anthony Martial’s equaliser against Newcastle last Saturday may have helped complete Manchester United’ s comeback from a two goal deficit, and helped keep Jose Mourinho in a job, at least for now, but it came at a considerable financial cost to his club.

That is because, according to TheTelegraph, it triggered a clause in the deal that was agreed with Monaco when they sold him to United in September 2015. They report that, in addition to an original £36 million, Monaco would be entitled to three additional tranche payments of £8.73 million each, provided that Martial played 25 games for France, was nominated for the Ballon D’Or, and scored 25 Premier League goals, by the end of the 2018/2019 season.

Whilst the first two provisions have now lapsed, Saturday’s goal was his 25th in the League for United, and they must now stump up the cash to the Ligue 1 side.
