Leeds return to the top of the Championship table:
Leeds beat their Yorkshire rivals Hull one nil on Tuesday night to regain top spot in the Championship table. A second-half goal from Tyler Roberts proved to be the winning goal for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. Leeds wasted some guilt edge chances to kill off the game in the first half. The Argentine manager was critical of his sides finishing but expressed his relief that his team got back to winning ways.
West Brom scored two late goals to draw at Hillsborough:
West Brom missed out on the chance to leapfrog league leaders Leeds as they drew 2-2 with Sheffield Wednesday. Two late goals in the space of sixty seconds secured the draw for West Brom. An own goal by the Owls defender Joel Pelupessy in the 86th minute and a wonder goal by the on-loan winger Harvey Barnes one minute later saved a point for the Baggies. Adam Reach opened the scoring for the home side in the 24th minute. Italian forward Fernando Forestieri scored the second goal to put Wednesday in a commanding lead at halftime.
A brace from Billy Sharp gives the Blades the win at Blackburn:
A double from Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp gave the Yorkshire side the three points at Blackburn. The win at Ewood Park puts the Blades joint top behind Leeds and Middlesborough on goal difference. Sheffield United have now won seven matches this season which is the most by any side in the Championship. The two-nil loss was the first home defeat for Blackburn since September 2017.
Middlesborough run out easy winners at Portman Road:
Ipswich are still searching for their first league win of the season after they lost two-nil to Middlesbrough on Tuesday night. Goals from Mo Besic and Stuart Down were enough for Tony Pulis’s side to stay level on points with Leeds at the top of the table. Paul Hurst has now drawn six and lost five of his eleven games in charge of the Tractor Boys.
Steve Bruce gets fired after three all draw with Preston:
Aston Villa sacked Steve Bruce on Wednesday afternoon following his side’s eventful three-all draw with Preston on Tuesday evening. Former Ireland international Glenn Whelan missed a 97th-minute penalty which would have won the game for the home side. Aston Villa started the game superbly and justifiably took a two-goal halftime lead. However, three second-half goal saw bottom placed Preston lead 3-2 heading into stoppage time. On-loan Everton winger Yannick Bolasie scored the equaliser for the home side in the 91st minute. Steve Bruce’s awful night got much worse as a Villa fan threw a cabbage at him with six minutes remaining.
Honours all square as Norwich draw with Derby:
An 86th-minute goal by Craig Bryson snatched a draw for Frank Lampard’s Derby County on Wednesday night. The draw ends Norwich recent winning run but pushes them up to fifth place in the table. Tim Klose’s 69th-minute header gave the Canaries lead, but the Rams fought bought well in the last quarter to take a share of the spoils.
Draws for Forest, Brentford and Bristol City as QPR win at Reading:
Millwall produced a gritty comeback to draw two-all with Nottingham Forest at The City Ground. Rotherham and Bristol City played a dull scoreless draw on Wednesday night. On Tuesday night, Stoke secured a vital home two-nil win over Bolton while QPR won away at Reading. Brentford and Birmingham played out an eventful one all draw which sees the Bees drop to sixth in the table.
I am a thirty-something, long-suffering Leeds United fan from Dublin. I have a long-standing love-hate relationship with the beautiful game. But at the end of the day, I couldn’t imagine my life without my weekly dose of football.
