Former Tottenham star cleared of perjury

He may have been voted men’s player of the year at the FIFA awafds last month, but Croatian captain Luke Modric is not held in universal esteem in his homeland.

In fact there was a real danger that he could be jailed for perjury, following the accusation that he had given false testimony last year in the trial of former Dinamo Zagreb Zdravko Mamic and three other club officials.

In a case concerning the embezzlement of transfer funds, Modric is said to have lied about when he signed an annex to a contract which entitled Mamic to a share of his future transfer fees, effectively backdating it after he had already left the club and joined Spurs.

As a result, Dimao Zagreb and the Croatian state both lost out on a substantial amount of revenue.

Now the current threat against the Real Madrid star has been lifted following a ruling by the Zagreb municipal crown court, although the state prosecutor has the right to appeal the verdict, according to The BBC.
