Rangers captain James Tavernier has signed a new four year deal at the club.
The 26-year old right-back was out of contract next June, and had attracted interest from the likes of West Bromwich Albion during the last transfer window, but now he has committed his immediate future to the Ibrox club.
The Bradford-born defender started his career with Newcastle United, but, after an itinerant few years which saw his sent to loan to no fewer than six clubs, he moved to Wigan in 2014. Another loan spell with Bristol City ensued, before both he and Wigan team mate Martyn Waghorn joined Rangers, then in the Scottish Championship, in July 2015.
He has since seen them promoted to the Premiership and become a stalwart of the side, making 146 appearances for the club in all competitions. Appointed temporary captain for a spell last season, new manager Steven Gerrard made Tavernier his full-time club skipper in the summer after being impressed by him during pre-season training.
Speaking to Rangers TV Tavernier said “I am delighted to go through the window and still be a Rangers player, and I have obviously been rewarded with a new contract.”
