Tottenham’s Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen is expecting the North London outfit to trigger an automatic extension to his contract which expires in June, keeping him at Spurs until 2020.
If they do, he will be the latest player to sign a new contract with the club, following in the footsteps of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, and manager Maurico Pochettino.
The 31-year old Belgian international has been one of the club’s most consistent performers since joining from Ajax in the summer of 2012, and has racked up more than 240 appearances for the club in all competitions, and is a virtual ever-present.
Now it looks like he is set to extend his stay, after the Evening Standard report comments he made to the Belgian media whilst on international duty “My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year. I think they will take up the option.”
Vertonghen’s attitude is in stark contrast to his club and international colleague Toby Alderweireld, who has refused to sign a new contract at the club, and was persistently linked with a summer move to Manchester United, although, in the end, no bid materialised.
