Cuco Martinez joins Stoke City on loan

Defender Cuco Martinez has left Everton for a season-long loan with Championship side Stoke City.

The 28-year old Dutch player is the latest in a line of Ronald Koeman signings to leave the Merseyside club this summer, as new manager Marco Silva continues to overhaul the Goodison Park squad.

Known principally as a right-back, Martinez can also be deployed as a centre-back or play in defensive midfield, and is a former Feyenoord  youth player, who played with Eredivisie clubs such as Waalwijk and FC Twente, before moving to England with Southampton in 2015, and then following Koeman when he moved to Everton.

Although born and raised in the Netherlands, Martinez represents Curaçao at international level, and is their current captain.

His move to the Britannia stadium will see him link-up with Everton teammate Ashley Williams, who is also on loan at Stoke for the season.  His new manager Gary Rowett is happy to add Martinez to his squad, telling the official Stoke website “Cuco adds size, strength and power to our back line and he has shown in the Premier League that he can play in a variety of positions.”
