West Ham fail in £27 million bid for Celta Vigo striker

Celta Vigo have turned down a bid of £27 million from West Ham United for their 21-year old forward Maxi Gomez.

The Uruguayan international striker is wanted by new Hammers manager Manuel Pellegrini to bolster his forward line, which is still short of striking options, despite the host of new players which have arrived at the club during the current transfer window, with Andy Carroll a long-term injury, and Javier Hernandez only just returning to the club from international duty with Mexico..

The Evening Standard reports, however, that Celta want £35 million for a player who they only signed a year ago from Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting, and who impressed in his solitary season in La Liga, scoring 18 times in 36 appearances.

Gomez who has seven international caps for his country was included in the Uruguay squad for the World Cup and made his solitary appearance of the tournament in the Quarter-Final loss to France when he replaced Christian Stuani.
