West Ham launch bid for attacking midfielder

West Ham have launched an official bid to sign attacking midfielder Franco Vazquez from La Liga side Sevilla.

That is according to Spanish media outlet Estadio Deportivo who report that the Hammer have submitted a transfer proposal to the Spanish club, with new manager Manuel Pellegrini said to be a huge fan of a player who, although he was born in Argentina, qualifies to play for Italy through his father, and has won two full caps for his adopted country.

Vasquez scored five goals and provided seven assists for Sevilla, who have previously valued him at £35 million, which is the figure contained in his release clause.  It is not known how much this matches what West Ham have bid for him.

Sevilla are reluctant to sell the player because of the difficulty in finding a replacement to fill his role, which is at the tip of midfield, behind the strikers. They are also said to be aware that they have an advantage over West Ham with the early closing of the transfer window for Premier League clubs on August 9th, which gives them the opportunity to drive their price up.
