38-year old defender Aaron Hughes has decided to prolong his career by signing a one-year extension to his contract at Hearts.
The Northern Ireland international had been considering retirement following his country’s tour of Central America, but has now decided to prolong his playing career for another year.
Hughes who made his name with Newcastle, Aston Villa and Fulham, joined Hearts on a six month deal in January 2017, but impressed so much, that the club awarded him a contract for the whole of the 2017 – 2018 season. Now they have again offered Hughes, who has become a firm favourite with the Tynecastle crowd, another 12 months.
Speaking to HeartsTV Hughes said “I needed a little bit of time to figure out if I was able to do another year, mentally and physically. I came to the decision that I’d like to stay on and I’m very grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity.”
The centre-half holds the current distinction of being Britain’s most-capped defender, with 112 international caps for Northern Ireland to his name.
