Former Arsenal star joins Villarreal

Former Arsenal star Santi Cazorla has re-joined La Liga side Villarreal.

The 33-year old midfielder has not played a game since October 2016 because of a persistent Achilles injury that has refused to heal properly. At one point there were fears that his foot would have to be amputated after the injury became infected, and he had to have part of his forearm grafted onto the damaged area.

The popular Spaniard, who won two FA Cups in 180 appearances for Arsenal was a free agent after being released by the North London club at the end of the season. Back in his native Spain he had been training with the Alaves youth team in a bid to regain his fitness.

However, now he has rejoined Villarreal, with the club’s official website confirming that Cazorla has returned to the team where he started his professional career in 2003, going on to play 228 times for the club over two spells.
