The Daily Mail reports that former Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer is set to leave newly relegated Stoke City and return to the Bundesliga with Hannover 96.
The central defender joined Stoke from Tottenham last August for a £18 million fee, but he struggled to settle with the Potters and made only 19 appearances for the club, and last played for them in January. New manager Paul Lambert placed the Austrian international on a special fitness regime and he was made to train with the under-23 side, but his form did not improve.
Wimmer was widely believed to be one of the players that Stoke’s England keeper Jack Butland was referring to when he criticised the club’s transfer policy saying that they had signed “players you cannot rely on”, after the club’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed.
Now it looks like the 25-year old will be sold, although Stoke will not get back anything like what they paid for him, after admitting they paid over the odds for him.
