Rooney linked with switch to MLS

talkSPORT report that Wayne Rooney could be following in the footsteps of Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard by heading to the United States to play Major League Soccer.

The 32-year old former England captain has been linked with a move away from Everton, with DC United in Washington reported to be his likely destination.

Rooney returned to Everton from Manchester United on a free transfer after a 13 year spell at Old Trafford, but his return to Merseyside has been a mixed success. Although he is the club’s leading scorer this season with 11 goals, he has not scored since December, and has struggled, along with the team, first under manager Ronald Koeman, then caretaker boss David Unsworth, and finally under Sam Allardyce.

Chairman Bill Kenwright is said to oppose the deal, but his influence is on the wane, with rumours of a boardroom reshuffle at Goodison Park imminent over the summer.
