Newcastle United are ready to break their transfer record this summer as they look for a striker that will score them 15 goals or more in a season, reports The Independent.
Heading into the penultimate goal of the season, Newcastle are one of the lowest scoring teams in the Premier League, having scored only 36, with Ayoze Perez their top scorer, despite finding the net only six times.
Now as they prepare for their second season back in the top division, manager Rafael Benitez has identified the need for a proven goalscorer at the club, whilst acknowledging that acquiring such a player will cost money, with the Spaniard saying “if you want to bring a striker with a guarantee of more than 10 – 15 goals per season, you have to pay money for him for sure”.
Newcastle do have a proven striker on their books in the form of Serb Aleksandar Mitrovic who has scored 12 goals in a prolific loan spell with Fulham. However, it is not clear whether Benitez wants him back at St. James Park or if he will sign for the London club on a permanent deal.
