The Daily Mirror reports that Steven Gerrard has agreed to become the next manager of Rangers, with former teammate Gary McAllister joining him as his assistant in Glasgow.
Gerrard is currently coaching the Liverpool under-18 side but is ready to give that role up as he takes his first senior management job. His move is firmly backed by current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp who said “if I was the owner of a club, I’d think about him. It’s his decision and we support him”.
The move is expected to be confirmed by Rangers in the coming days, and will see Gerrard succeed Graeme Murty at Ibrox, who has steered the former champions into third place in the table in Scotland’s top flight. However, they are now 13 points adrift of their deadly Glasgow rivals, Celtic, and the size of the job to be done was underlined on the weekend as Rangers were thrashed 5 – 0 by the Hoops in the Old Firm derby as Celtic wrapped up their seventh successive title.
Rangers last won the title in 2011, but have since faced insolvency and relegation to the bottom-tier of Scottish professional football before clawing their way back-up again. They are hoping that Gerrard is the man who can help bring the glory days back to the west end of Glasgow.
