Alderweireld headed for Tottenham exit after being dropped

Toby Alderweireld could be headed for the exit at Tottenham after he was dropped for their squad to face Chelsea on Sunday, according to Metro.

The 29-year old Belgian, who has been struggling with injuries this season, was declared fit by his international manager Roberto Martinez during the break from Premier League football and started in his country’s 4 -0 friendly win over Saudi Arabia last week.

Despite this, Mauricio Pochettino decided to leave him out of the squad altogether for the team’s visit to Stamford Bridge, reigniting questions about his future in North London.

Alderweireld is out of contract at Spurs in June next year, and has refused to commit himself to a new contract, as he holds out for more money. Tottenham are unwilling to break the club’s rigid wage structure to keep him and are now prepared to sell him instead, with Manchester United touted as a possible destination.

Spurs meanwhile showed that they did not miss him on the pitch as they won away at Chelsea for the first time in 28 years, with Dele Ali getting two of the goals.
