Manchester United plotting summer move for Real Madrid defender

According to the Daily Mirror, Manchester United could be planning a summer move for Real Madrid central defender Raphael Varane.

Jose Mourinho wants to strengthen his central defence this summer, with the futures of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof all under consideration and Varane is one of the names on his list, along with Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, and Samuel Umtiti from Barcelona.

This is not the first time that Manchester United have been linked with the 24-year old Frenchman. Former boss Sir Alec Ferguson tried to sign him as a teenager in 2011, before the player eventually opted for Real. And Mourinho himself, when he was boss at Chelsea in 2014, tried to lure him to Stamford Bridge.

Now it looks like a fresh move to sign Varane could be on the cards this summer, although price could be a sticking point. Real are willing to sell the French international, but want £50 million for his services, whilst United only believe he is worth £40 million.
