City battle United, Real and Barcelona for German international

The Sun reports that Manchester City are ready to battle neighbours United, and Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona for the signature of German international Jerome Boateng, who currently plays for Bayern Munich.

The 29-year old World Cup winner, has returned to regular action this season after missing the whole of the previous campaign with a thigh problem, and is part of the Bayern team that is competing on three fronts for honours, running away with the Bundesliga, in the semi-final of the German Cup, and drawn against Sevilla in the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League.

Despite this, the versatile defender, who can play at right-back as well as his favoured position of centre-back, is expected to leave Munich this season, atracting interest amongst all of Europe’s top clubs.

United, Real and Barcelona are all monitoring his situation, but City may be regarded as favourites, with manager Pep Guardiola knowing the player well from his spell at Bayern, when he won three consecutive Bundesliga titles between 2014 and 2016.

If Boateng does move to City, it will mean a return to a club he played briefly for in the 2010 – 2011 season after joining them from Hamburg in a £10.4 million deal. However, his time in Manchester was not a happy one, with his playing time restricted by injury, and he moved to Bayern less than a year later.
