Owner Roman Abramovich is considering keeping Antonio Conte at Chelsea for another season, reports The Sun, even if the club miss out on Champions League football next season.
The West London club currently are 5th in the Premier League, five points behind fourth-placed Spurs with nine games to go. They are still in the Champions League but, having drawn one-all with Barcelona in the first leg of their last-16 tie two weeks ago, face an uphill task to progress when the revere fixture is played at the Camp Nou next week.
That type of form in previous seasons would have spelled the end for any manager of Chelsea but, as a Stamford Bridge insider revealed “Roman is not so trigger happy these days when it comes to firing managers.”
Conte will have one year left on his contract with Chelsea in the summer, and it has been widely accepted that he will depart, having been linked with the PSG job, and a return to managing the Italian national side.
However, he may now continue at Chelsea for another year, although there does appear to be a price if he keeps his job, with the Italian expected to tone down his continual moaning about the club’s transfer policy.
