Liverpool eye Tottenham midfielder as Emre Can replacement

The Daily Mail reports that Liverpool are amongst a clutch of club’s monitoring the situation of Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama, as they seek a replacement for Emre Can who has refused to sign a new contract and has been widely linked with a move to Juventus in the summer.

Wanyama has started in Spurs recent FA Cup ties, including Sunday’s 5th round match away to Rochdale, but, apart from that, has been used sparingly this season as he fights his way back from a knee injury.

However, one impressive cameo appearance was Spurs 2 -2 draw with Liverpool, when he got his side back into the game with a stunning long-range strike.

Recently youth team coach Steven Gerrard identified the need for Liverpool to recruit a monster holding midfielder for next season, describing such a character as a “Wanyama-like player who sits in and is disciplined”.

Whilst Gerrard’s comments were not taken as evidence of intent, the interest in the Kenyan is said to be genuine, with Manchester United and Chelsea both said to be monitoring the 26-year old’s situation as well.
