According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are ready to sell the defensive duo of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in the summer, as manager Jose Mourinho gets ready to overhaul his back line.
Both have been heavily criticised in recent weeks, with Smalling singled out after United’s weekend loss away to Newcastle, in which he was booked for a dive, with United conceding to Matt Ritchie from the resulting free kick.
Jones meanwhile had his own issues in the recent defeat at Tottenham scoring an own goal with his manager sarcastically noting that it was “an amazing goal that Harry Kane would love to score.”
Despite these recent lapses, United have the best defence in the league so far this season in terms of goals against, conceding 19 – runaway Manchester rivals have let in one more.
Names said to be considered as summer reinforcements include Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Leicester City centre-half Harry Maguire.
