Metro reports that Manchester United have targeted Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic as a replacement for Michael Carrick.
36-year old Carrick is set to retire at the end of the season after 12 years at Old Trafford and has accepted a coaching role at the club when he hangs up his boots. United have already confirmed that they want to make one midfield signing in the summer, and should Marouane Fellaini decide not to renew his contract, could be forced into making another.
Nice star Jean Michel Seri and Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic –Savic have previously been linked with moves to United, but now Kovacic is said to have been added to their shortlist.
The 23-year old Croatian has struggled for game time at the Bernabeu, and finds himself below Brazilian Casemiro in the pecking order at Real, so a move to United could offer him the chance to play regular first-team football.
