The Telegraph reports that Monaco have agreed to sell striker Guido Carrillo to Southampton for £19.2 million.
26-year old Carrillo joined Monaco from Estudiantes of Argentina in 2015, but he has struggled for first team opportunities in the Principality, making 22 appearances in all competitions for the Monegasques this season scoring 5 times.
Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino knows Carrillo well from when they were at Estudiantes together, and is hoping the tall striker can help salvage the Saints’ season, which is in danger of turning ugly with the team now languishing in the relegation places.
The team is short of goals, with main striker Charlie Austin injured, whilst back-up Shane Long’s goal against Crystal Palace was his first in 35 matches.
Pellegrino’s position is under considerable pressure, and he is being widely tipped as the most likely candidate to be the ninth Premier League manager to lose his job this season, so he will be desperately hoping Carrillo can make an instant impact.
