Southampton confirm their interest in Theo Walcott

Southampton have confirmed their interest in re-signing their former player Theo Walcott in the January transfer window – but want to negotiate on the price demanded by Arsenal, according to the Daily Mail.

The North London club want more than £25 million for the 28-year old England international, who is under contract with The Gunners until the end of next season. However, despite their coffers having been swollen by the money they have received from Liverpool from the sale of Virgil van Dyck, that is big money for a club like Southampton, with their manager Mauricio Pellegrino commenting after their FA Cup victory over Fulham that Walcott is “a good player” whilst acknowledging “we know the market is difficult but we are working on that”.

Southampton in recent weeks have dropped perilously close to the drop zone in the Premier League, and are desperate to improve their striking options, especially as Charlie Austin has been ruled out for two months with a hamstring injury.

Walcott is a former Southampton academy graduate.
