With Ross Barkley already signed, another player linked with a surprise move to Chelsea in the January transfer window is West Ham striker Andy Carroll, according to The Mirror.
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte wants to add more depth to his forwards at Stamford Bridge. Main striker Alvaro Morata has enjoyed a mixed start to his career at Chelsea, and was culpable of several glaring misses in their recent Premier League draw with Arsenal. Meanwhile, Conte clearly does not trust his deputy, Michy Batshuayi, and there is even talk that the Belgian may be allowed to leave on loan during the January window.
Carroll may not seem like the obvious solution to Chelsea’s striking woes. His previous spell at a top-6 club, Liverpool, was unsuccessful, as he failed to justify his £35 million transfer fee from Newcastle, whilst his career at West Ham has been dogged by injury and ill-discipline, with a number of red and yellow cards to his name.
However, he is a fine header of the ball and is a good target man, so may add depth to Chelsea’s squad as they compete for trophies on four fronts.
Andy is an exiled English football fan living in Cyprus. He loves all sports but football is his abiding passion, and he still has dreams every now and then about scoring the winning goal in a Wembley Cup Final, even though his playing days are long gone. He follows most major leagues, across Europe at least, and has a favoured team in each. When he’s not watching, listening, reading or downloading podcasts about football, he spend his time worrying about his beloved Arsenal.
