Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal are likely to be active during the January transfer window, stating that the club is open in any position for an “exceptional player”.
Whilst any movements are dependent, to a certain extent, as to whether Alexis Sanchez or Mesut Ozil will leave this month, the club needs to begin planning for life without the duo, and suitable high-class replacements are being sought, with players linked including Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez, PSG’s Julian Draxler, and long-term target Thomas Lemar of Monaco.
However, one player who will definitely not be joining Arsenal is Chelsea defender David Luiz, with Wenger rubbishing newspaper stories which had suggested that the Brazilian could be set for a move to North London. Luiz has fallen out of favour with Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and could be set for a loan move or permanent deal away from Stamford Bridge this month, but The Emirates can now be discounted as a likely destination.
