West Bromwich Albion centre-back Jonny Evans could be set for a shock return to Manchester United, as the Old Trafford club seek a replacement for Eric Bailly who is set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines following an ankle injury he picked-up on international duty.
That would represent a substantial turnaround who was deemed surplus to requirements at United two and a half years ago, when the manager at the time sold him to West Brom for £6 million.
Evans has been a star in a struggling West Brom side since he arrived in the West Midlands, and currently captains the side, as well as being a stalwart of the Northern Ireland international side, with 67 full caps to his name.
United may face competition from neighbours City, who had a bid of £20 million defender turned down in the summer, whilst Arsenal also are interested in the 29-year old.
However, United are thought to have the edge because of Evans’ emotional attachment and links to Old Trafford where he spent 11 years of his career, so one of the surprise moves of the year may be about to happen.
Evans played against United on Sunday, but was unable to prevent his old side beating Albion by 2 goals to one.
