The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Fernando Torrres is said to be lining-up a loan move back to the Premier League in January, with both Newcastle United and Southampton said to be interested.
The 33-year old, who plays for Atletico Madrid, is desperate for playing time, as he has only started two matches this season, one in La Liga and one in the Spanish Cup. Now, with Diego Costa finally eligible to play for Atletico from January, he finds his chances of first-team action in Madrid diminishing further, and is seeking a short-term move abroad, with the Premiership his preferred destination.
Although he is set to retire at the end of his current deal in 18 months’ time, and is said to be determined to spend his last season with Atletico, regardless of his playing time, he still has ambitions for this season, and is now looking for a short-term loan. Torres knows both Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez and Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino well, as they were all at Liverpool together, so either club would seem to be a good fit for the striker.
