Manchester City and Barcelona are said to be in a straight fight for the signature of Borussia Dortmund holding midfielder Julian Weigl next summer.
With Yaya Toure and Fernandinho both out of contract at the Etihad, the young German, who is regarded as one of the most sought-after players in Europe, is regarded as a natural replacement by Pep Guardiola. However, Spanish paper AS report that Barcelona, who have been following the player for more than a year, are also heavily interested, viewing Weigl as “another Sergio Busquets”
Weigl, who has 5 full international caps for Germany, has made 62 appearances for Dortmund, having joined them from 1860 Munich in 2015. The 22-year old is out of contract at the end of the season, and has indicated that he is not willing to sign a new deal with Borussia.
What seems certain is that Weigl will be playing his football somewhere else next season. Whether that is in Manchester or Barcelona remains to be seen.
